I used prevacid. Took it for a couple of years. Stopped just for the hell of it.. about five years ago.. haven’t had a problem since. Eat whatever I want, too. Not that changing your diet wont help. I’m just saying.. if you have insureance.. the prevacid has no side effects at all that I’m aware of. Pop a capsule in the morning and forget about it. Tomatos have lycopene.. which is great against cancer of the prostate.. or put another way, which is great for not having a great rot up yer pooter which makes you piss funny, not screw, and then die. Pepcid and over the counter stuff is not really for acid reflux, it’s for when you drink too much or eat the wrong thing. Prevacid stops the acid from building up in the first place. And by the way.. get on it. I dinked around with diet and over the counter stuff and wound up doing damage to my esophagus. The acid rises up beyond the point where the body can handle it.. and burns it… I was lucky.. but I’ve seen operations on people who seriously messed themselves up by waiting to treat acid reflux.. and you don’t wanna go there. Twang!

Question:

John Que mentioned raising the head of the bed in a post. How successful have NG members been in doing this. We have divan type beds and some years ago we put two bricks under each side of my wifes one. Her need for elevation seemed to diminish and we abandoned the bricks. Last year I put two thick copies of the Yellow Pages directory at the head of my bed. I found that the mattress tended to slip down the base, the pillows moving with it and ended with my feet sticking out at the bottom:-) After a few nights there was a distinctive crack as I got into bed as the strain proved to much for the divan. I went looking for new beds this week and was told by the sales person in one store that beds are not designed to be propped up and that my best option would be to buy a specially designed mechanical bed. I replied that such beds seem be sold by rather sharp salesmen and seem to cost as much as a new car. I had a look in a more sensible bed shop today where the owner agreed that most beds are not suitable to be propped up as they are either too heavy and often have drawers under then. Other beds have a join in the middle making them unsuitable. His recommendation was for a "hotel" type bed, a base with three legs on either side. I still feel that the pressure on it’s front legs would be too great. He also thought that bricks are not the best option and that shops who sell aids for the disabled have something better to raise the bed with. How have others dealt with the situation? Derek.

Response:

I had the head of my bed frame raised at first back around 1990 with books and they kept falling down. I have a queen size bed with a steel frame with a post or foot at each end and side of the bed. I had a special metal frame built for me at a local metal shop. The frame was built out of aluminum square tubing, about 1" 1/4. The frame was built to look like an upside down "T" with the top of the T becoming the base of the frame. Each leg of the frame is 16" long. Then I have connecting support aluminum tubing run from each side of the bed to the other at the top and bottom. In the top of the frame I had a "V" put in for my bed frame to sit in. It is steady as a rock. Never a move or creak. With this frame I can move it up toward the head or down toward the foot and thus can vary the height of my bed frame. I now have it set at about 17" high. The mattresses don’t move during the night. My wife and I do slide down just a little bit but it doesn’t bother either of us. We have gotten use to it and miss it when we are away. When we are away I put pillows or blankets under my mattress for a temporary answer. The frame cost about $78.00 when I had it built and has been the best money I ever spent to help with GERD. Also please read my comments about Ginger Root Juice. It was a miracle cure for me and I still take it every day. See below. Hiatus Hernia (GERD) (1 of 1) This is my testimonial to the relief I have discovered through Dr. Stoll and the information he furnished about ginger root juice. A brief history about myself and my condition. I am a 57 year old male and have suffered from a hiatal hernia for over 25 years. My condition started many years ago with occasional heartburn. I treated this condition with over-the-counter ant-acids and as the condition worsened I progressed to prescriptions for Zantac 150 mg. Over the years as I would have heartburn, I would take ant-acids and Zantac as needed. In the last two years, my condition became so bad to where I was having heartburn almost constantly. I began to take Zantac 3 to 4 times every day. My esophagus became so sore and sensitive that I began to have problems swallowing. Some days the condition was so bad I could only eat milk and cereal. I began to lose weight. During this time I was seeing three medical doctors. Every doctor prescribed Zantac, Propulsid, Prilosec and Prevacid. I tried every combination of these medicines. Some combinations would give temporary help but the heartburn would return every time and was getting worse. In February of this year, one doctor performed an endoscopy examination which showed some scarring of the esophagus. The treatment remained the same. Take the above medicine and eat only bland foods. Nothing helped and my condition continued to become worse and worse. Just 30 days ago, I was seriously considering an operation to correct the hiatal hernia. A few weeks ago, I began to search the Internet for help for my problem. I was reading messages posted to the Newsgroup alt.support.heartburn and saw a message where a man was having the same problems. We exchanged email and he introduced me to Dr. Stoll and his suggestion that ginger root juice could help my condition. The amazing thing to me was that Dr. Stoll was *not* asking for any money but had posted this treatment on the Internet free to all. When the man I had exchanged email said the ginger root juice had helped him, I decided to try it. I bought a juicer and some ginger root from a local farmer’s market. I started taking the ginger root juice on September 8th. My first taste of the juice did cause a slight burning sensation in my mouth and throat. ( I actually made my wife test it first because I’m such a big chicken) As the juice traveled down my esophagus, I felt a slight warming sensation down my esophagus and into my stomach. The second day, the burning sensation was less and the warm feeling felt good. On the third day, my condition began to improve dramatically. By the fourth day I was able to reduce the amount of Zantac I was taking without having heartburn. On the sixth day of the juice treatment, my wife and I were able to go out and eat a large Italian supper with a hugh chocolate cake covered with chocolate icing. My stomach actually felt good. For the first time in months, I was able to eat a normal meal with no discomfort. I made my second batch of ginger root juice last night. I make enough juice to last a week and keep the juice in the refrigerator. I believe the juice has healed my inflamed esophagus. I intend on taking the juice for several more weeks to make sure my esophagus continues to heal. Some time in the future, I may stop taking the juice but I feel very comfortable in the knowledge that I can start taking the juice again any time I need it. I have felt no side effects from taking the ginger root juice. The cost is insignificant. In addition to the ginger root juice healing my inflamed esophagus, I also feel an overall improved condition of health. After living with a constant, nagging and very painful stomach and esophagus for years, I now have a new and fresh outlook on my life. **I feel great ** I cannot praise and thank Dr. Stoll enough for giving me this information about ginger root juice. I have already emailed Dr. Stoll my personal thanks for his help and I am going to contribute money to him to help him to spread the word about this remarkable cure for Upper Gastrointestinal Symptom Relief. Dr. Stoll was kind enough to personally reply to me about my email. Even that is remarkable in our modern world where the greed for money is the credo for most doctors and people of all walks of life. I am also telling everyone I know about this remarkable cure by email and snail mail. I welcome anyone to email me or call me with questions or comments.
Response:

A cure, sorry remedy:-) for the injured oesophagus is Manuka Honey from New Zealand. A tablespoonful is taken three times a day an hour before meals, it has a healing effect and the coating stops irritation when eating food. I had been taking it for six weeks and was much better when I had a blood test. My doctor was horrified that my blood sugar was 14.3 and pronounced me diabetic. I stopped the honey and six weeks later my blood sugar was down to 7.3 and my HbA1c was 6.5. I cut out my daily slice of cake, my glass of Cranberry juice and five or six butterscotch sweets and the next test had my blood sugar at 3.8. This week I have started the Manuka honey again but on a much reduced dose. I began to take Zantac 3 to 4 > times every day. My esophagus became so sore and sensitive that I > began to have problems swallowing. Some days the condition was so bad > I could only eat milk and cereal. I began to lose weight. > During this time I was seeing three medical doctors. Every doctor > prescribed Zantac, Propulsid, Prilosec and Prevacid. I tried every > combination of these medicines. Some combinations would give temporary > help but the heartburn would return every time and was getting worse. > In February of this year, one doctor performed an endoscopy > examination which showed some scarring of the esophagus. The treatment > remained the same. Take the above medicine and eat only bland foods. > Nothing helped and my condition continued to become worse and worse. > Just 30 days ago, I was seriously considering an operation to correct > the hiatal hernia. > A few weeks ago, I began to search the Internet for help for my > problem. I was reading messages posted to the Newsgroup > alt.support.heartburn and saw a message where a man was having the > same problems. We exchanged email and he introduced me to Dr. Stoll > and his suggestion that ginger root juice could help my condition. The > amazing thing to me was that Dr. Stoll was *not* asking for any money > but had posted this treatment on the Internet free to all. When the > man I had exchanged email said the ginger root juice had helped him, I > decided to try it. > I bought a juicer and some ginger root from a local farmer’s market. I > started taking the ginger root juice on September 8th. My first taste > of the juice did cause a slight burning sensation in my mouth and > throat. ( I actually made my wife test it first because I’m such a big > chicken) As the juice traveled down my esophagus, I felt a slight > warming sensation down my esophagus and into my stomach. The second > day, the burning sensation was less and the warm feeling felt good. On > the third day, my condition began to improve dramatically. By the > fourth day I was able to reduce the amount of Zantac I was taking > without having heartburn. On the sixth day of the juice treatment, my > wife and I were able to go out and eat a large Italian supper with a > hugh chocolate cake covered with chocolate icing. My stomach actually > felt good. For the first time in months, I was able to eat a normal > meal with no discomfort. > I made my second batch of ginger root juice last night. I make enough > juice to last a week and keep the juice in the refrigerator. I believe > the juice has healed my inflamed esophagus. I intend on taking the > juice for several more weeks to make sure my esophagus continues to > heal. Some time in the future, I may stop taking the juice but I feel > very comfortable in the knowledge that I can start taking the juice > again any time I need it. I have felt no side effects from taking the > ginger root juice. The cost is insignificant. > In addition to the ginger root juice healing my inflamed esophagus, I > also feel an overall improved condition of health. After living with a > constant, nagging and very painful stomach and esophagus for years, I > now have a new and fresh outlook on my life. > **I feel great ** > I cannot praise and thank Dr. Stoll enough for giving me this > information about ginger root juice. I have already emailed Dr. Stoll > my personal thanks for his help and I am going to contribute money to > him to help him to spread the word about this remarkable cure for > Upper Gastrointestinal Symptom Relief. Dr. Stoll was kind enough to > personally reply to me about my email. Even that is remarkable in our > modern world where the greed for money is the credo for most doctors > and people of all walks of life. > I am also telling everyone I know about this remarkable cure by email > and snail mail. I welcome anyone to email me or call me with questions > or comments. > Thankfully, > Bill Poston > 1140 Azalea Circle > Marietta, GA 30062 > 770-973-4590 >John Que mentioned raising the head of the bed in a post.
A few question for Bill. Do you use a foam mattress? My inner spring mattress does not do a good job when I set additional 8 inches of elevation at the head. Do mean an additional 18 inches at the head of your bed? I estimate that your setting (if it is what I think you mean) is at about ~11 degrees from horizontal. Certainly less extreme than sleeping in an easy chair with back at 40 degrees:-) I tried ginger root as a tea of sorts. I cut up an ounce and poured hot water on it. It did not harm as I recall though I didn’t continue. Perhaps a some burning at the bottom of the esophagus. I may have tried it on top of the PPI medication. I’ll try it again sometime, next time with juiced ginger. I am really pleased with betaine HCL and pepsin. My meals seem to be digesting peacefully without acid reflux or nonacid reflux. So far I’ve been using 30 grains per meal or major snack. Each 10 grains costs 6 cents per capsule for 60 to 80 cents per day. With the PPI medications, the meals often justed seem to set in the stomach sometimes for 5 or 6 hours!! I’d get reflux/burping though it didn’t burn. Indeed, even without the PPI meds and no betaine HCL, I got this effect to some extent. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I had the head of my bed frame raised at first back around 1990 with > books and they kept falling down. I have a queen size bed with a steel > frame with a post or foot at each end and side of the bed. I had a > special metal frame built for me at a local metal shop. The frame was > built out of aluminum square tubing, about 1" 1/4. The frame was built > to look like an upside down "T" with the top of the T becoming the > base of the frame. Each leg of the frame is 16" long. Then I have > connecting support aluminum tubing run from each side of the bed to > the other at the top and bottom. In the top of the frame I had a "V" > put in for my bed frame to sit in. It is steady as a rock. Never a > move or creak. With this frame I can move it up toward the head or > down toward the foot and thus can vary the height of my bed frame. I > now have it set at about 17" high. The mattresses don’t move during > the night. My wife and I do slide down just a little bit but it > doesn’t bother either of us. We have gotten use to it and miss it when > we are away. When we are away I put pillows or blankets under my > mattress for a temporary answer. With this frame I can move it up toward the head or >> down toward the foot and thus can vary the height of my bed frame. I >> now have it set at about 17" high. The mattresses don’t move during >> the night. My wife and I do slide down just a little bit but it >> doesn’t bother either of us. We have gotten use to it and miss it when >> we are away. When we are away I put pillows or blankets under my >> mattress for a temporary answer. The frame cost about $78.00 when I >> had it built and has been the best money I ever spent to help with >> GERD. >> Also please read my comments about Ginger Root Juice. It was a miracle >> cure for me and I still take it every day. See below. >> Hiatus Hernia (GERD) (1 of 1) >> This is my testimonial to the relief I have discovered through Dr. >> Stoll and the information he furnished about ginger root juice. >> A brief history about myself and my condition. I am a 57 year old male >> and have suffered from a hiatal hernia for over 25 years. My condition >> started many years ago with occasional heartburn. I treated this >> condition with over-the-counter ant-acids and as the condition >> worsened I progressed to prescriptions for Zantac 150 mg. Over the >> years as I would have heartburn, I would take ant-acids and Zantac as >> needed. >> In the last two years, my condition became so bad to where I was >> having heartburn almost constantly. I began to take Zantac 3 to 4 >> times every day. My esophagus became so sore and sensitive that I >> began to have problems swallowing. Some days the condition was so bad >> I could only eat milk and cereal. I began to lose weight. >> During this time I was seeing three medical doctors. Every doctor >> prescribed Zantac, Propulsid, Prilosec and Prevacid. I tried every >> combination of these medicines. Some combinations would give temporary >> help but the heartburn would return every time and was getting worse. >> In February of this year, one doctor performed an endoscopy >> examination which showed some scarring of the esophagus. The treatment >> remained the same. Take the above medicine and eat only bland foods. >> Nothing helped and my condition continued to become worse and worse. >> Just 30 days ago, I was seriously considering an operation to correct >> the hiatal hernia. >> A few weeks ago, I began to search the Internet for help for my >> problem. I was reading messages posted to the Newsgroup >> alt.support.heartburn and saw a message where a man was having the >> same problems. We exchanged email and he introduced me to Dr. Stoll >> and his suggestion that ginger root juice could help my condition. The >> amazing thing to me was that Dr. Stoll was *not* asking for any money >> but had posted this treatment on the Internet free to all. When the >> man I had exchanged email said the ginger root juice had helped him, I >> decided to try it. >> I bought a juicer and some ginger root from a local farmer’s market. I >> started taking the ginger root juice on September 8th. My first taste >> of the juice did cause a slight burning sensation in my mouth and >> throat. ( I actually made my wife test it first because I’m such a big >> chicken) As the juice traveled down my esophagus, I felt a slight >> warming sensation down my esophagus and into my stomach. The second >> day, the burning sensation was less and the warm feeling felt good. On >> the third day, my condition began to improve dramatically. By the >> fourth day I was able to reduce the amount of Zantac I was taking >> without having heartburn. On the sixth day of the juice treatment, my >> wife and I were able to go out and eat a large Italian supper with a >> hugh chocolate cake covered with chocolate icing. My stomach actually >> felt good. For the first time in months, I was able to eat a normal >> meal with no discomfort. >> I made my second batch of ginger root juice last night. I make enough >> juice to last a week and keep the juice in the refrigerator. I believe >> the juice has healed my inflamed esophagus. I intend on taking the >> juice for several more weeks to make sure my esophagus continues to >> heal. Some time in the future, I may stop taking the juice but I feel >> very comfortable in the knowledge that I can start taking the juice >> again any time I need it. I have felt no side effects from taking the >> ginger root juice. The cost is insignificant. >> In addition to the ginger root juice healing my inflamed esophagus, I >> also feel an overall improved condition of health. After living with a >> constant, nagging and very painful stomach and esophagus for years, I >> now have a new and fresh outlook on my life. >> **I feel great ** >> I cannot praise and thank Dr. Stoll enough for giving me this >> information about ginger root juice. I have already emailed Dr. Stoll >> my personal thanks for his help and I am going to contribute money to >> him to help him to spread the word about this remarkable cure for >> Upper Gastrointestinal Symptom Relief. Dr. Stoll was kind enough to >> personally reply to me about my email.
If you try and think about what is going on you can understand it. Liquid will run to the lowest part of whatever container it is in. For example, take a bottle of water and lay it flat. The water will normally touch the top of the bottle. When you lay flat the acid in your stomach is going to touch your LES and it is this constant touching of the LES with the stomach acid that wears the LES down and it becomes weak and allows the acid then to reflux up into your esophagus. So the more erect your esophagus is the less chance of the acid touching your LES. Once you understand that then you can make an intelligent decision about how high to raise the head of your bed. The metal frame I had built is moveable so I can move the frame up toward the head of the bed and thereby lower the head of the frame or if I move the frame down toward the foot of the bed it raises the head of the bed. If anyone wants I can take a picture as best I can and send it to you via email. No problem. But, just trust this is one of the first steps to healing your esophagus. The second is to use the Ginger Root Juice. That will really help and then other lifestyle changes like no coffee, soft drinks, tea, hot or cold liquids, spicy food, sharp edged foods like potato chips and crackers, etc. If you would like call me and I will be glad to talk to about any of this. Bill 770-973-4590 Hope this helps. Now, once the LES becomes weak and useless from the stomach acid touching the LES the more you need to make sure that no acid comes in contact with your LES so each person will have to experiment with the height and decide which is best for him. Once the LES becomes so weak that it doesn’t close at all it may take months and years for it to regain its strength if at all. >Yes, the head of my bed frame is reasied 17" above the foot of my bed. >That’s a LOT of height! >has this really helped a lot? >I only have my bed raised maybe 6". >Im thinking maybe that not enough after reading your >post.

I’ll get the picture as soon as I can. I’m real busy right now it’ll be a while. As to the decaf tea. There is still caffieene in it and depending on how weak your LES will make the difference. i have read some doctor’s descriptions of LES’s that were so weak the LES just hung in mid air like a butterfly. No closing at all. The docs have a technical name for it and I can’t remember it right now. The docs have some way of measuring how much strength or how much it closes. They put osmething down your throat and esophagus and monitor the pressure of the LES. This test determines if they cut on you or not. But, under no circumstances would I have the surgery (Nissen Fundoplication) done except if I had a stomach strangulation which I have had several times but I just relax and sip cool water and eventually the stomach unstragulates. Very scary. Hope this helps. >If anyone wants I can take a picture as best I can and send it to you >via email.
> I will try but I’m not an artist. I have done this before and most > people can’t recognize what it is. I think posting a picture to your > email would be best.

Can you just attach a picture to your post or perhaps upload it to a website somewhere (there are lots of free web space providers like geocities)? That way you wouldn’t have to send copies to people individually. I’d be interested in seeing how you’ve set this up. Thanks

Question:

I’ve had bad heartburn-like pain in my chest for the past 5 months at varying levels of intensity. At its worst, I’ve gone to the emergency room. Sometimes it is almost tolerable. This started after 10 days on doxycycline, so the initial thought was that caused irritation to the esophagus or stomach. Accordingly, my Prevacid dose was upped and the theory was that after a few weeks of extra acid suppression, I would heal, and could go back to the 15 mg every other day dose of Prevacid I was taking originally. Well, 5 months later, and there is really no improvement in symptoms. In fact, I’m now on 30 mg twice a day and it’s no better: I still get excrutiating attacks ever few weeks, and the pain is always present if sometimes almost tolerable. I even switched to Aciphex for 3 weeks, but it wasn’t better than Prevacid and made me feel "strange" so I went back to Prevacid. Now, 4 months ago an endoscopy revealed that my esophagus was fine, but there was some "slight irritation" of the stomach lining itself. I have yet to get another endoscopy to see if it looks worse, but probably will. So, my question is why the heck am I not healing? BTW, there seems to be almost no correspondence between the level of pain and what food I eat, but I eat cautiously anyway. Also, I never drink alcohol, I don’t smoke, and I’m under weight if anything. I would describe the pain as not so much burning as a tightness/fullness/achiness, mostly under the sternum, but often also under the right breast area. The later pain is a poser because I didn’t think anything but lung was over there! Thanks for any insight. John.

Not enough info here to do anything but take a wild guess. You need another EGD, plus ambulatory pH testing and esophageal manometry. HMc

Just a couple of thoughts. Have you been checked for Heliobactor Pilori infection in your stomach? The pain you describe sounds similar to that which I had when infected. Re the pain under the right breast, I think your gall bladder is on the RHS, in behind the lower ribs. Gall stones can cause anything from a dull ache to sharp pains in this area.
A few months back I had tightness in my chest and what felt like heart palpitations. So I went to the doc and they run an ECG and find high voltage spikes or something to that effect. So they do an echocardiogram (sp?) to check for an enlarged heart, but find nothing. The problem has continued for months since then, mostly at night when I sleep on my back. I’ve also had back pain and what feels like swelling of the adams apple (difficulty swallowing) and when it’s real bad, then urge to throw up. I’ve also started to notice this during exercise. I’ve never had "classic heartburn" symptoms though. So I go back to the doc and they saddle me up with a 24 hr monitor to rule out heart problems. So now he prescribes an antacid, without doing any gastric tests. Everything is stress with this guy. From what little I’ve read in this group, this can be a complex problem, anything from Acid Reflux to GERD or spasms of the esophagus. Apart from finding a new doctor, what else can I do to narrow this down?

See a gastroenterologist or surgeon. You need an upper GI endoscopy (EGD) and 48-hours ambulatory pH testing to rule out GERD. HMc

Following up on my own question. Will the stock 2wd rear shocks be long up enough for a 2" rear lift? It also does appear that Tough Country makes a block lift for the s-10 2wd blazer – not sure why. The truck’s rear uses springs (not coils).. What about the following Warrior 1.5" spring shackle product http://www.tellico4×4.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_offroad/6360 1-1/2" Rear Lift Shackles For Chevy $34.95 Will the stock shocks be long enough with this product?
Yes its spring (not coil). How about shackles like these: http://www.tellico4×4.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_offroad/6360 Good idea? Will the 2" lift seriously impact the ride/ stock shocks (2003 s10 blazer 2wd) ? Today I think the back end is all over the place anyways. Thanks.

Response:

When i said "spring-over" i meant locating the axle under the springs which would lift the truck w/o changing springs but you must cut the spring perches off the bottom of the axle housing and weld them on top. 4" of shackle length will lift the truck 2" Shackle length versus lift is a 2:1 ratio I don’t like shackles because they allow lateral axle movement. — Mad Dog

Good info Mad .. True newbie here and looking for some info like this help make desicion. In terms of lateral movement, whats the risk? and are shackles any worse than blocks? Also, how can these guys claim max lift of 2" on a 1.5" product? BTW, I wont be doing any real offroading with this truck, but will be towing a 20 foot cruiser. thanks again.

Response:

I ‘m thinking that blocks are out of the question because as "Styx" pointed out your axle is above the springs so blocks will lower the vehicle. The thought of towing a 20′ cruiser with extended shackles gives me heartburn. You should seriously consider beefing the leafs or installing air-bags. — Mad Dog

If it doesn’t come with longer u-bolts…..get them You wont need to shim the angle cause it under 4" of lift. Maybe you should consider a add a leaf kit instead of blocks, it would supplement the load carrying capacity while lifting the ass end and they are safer than blocks. — Mad Dog

Hello: I realize this has been touched on, somewhat, in previous posts, but would like tostart a new thread devoted to this single question, please. What is the latest research regarding the taking of Prevacid (or Nexium, etc.) indefinitely ? I guess I’m bothered by all their ads that say to take only for a maximum of approx. 8 days or so, and that it is not for long term use. My general MD (and also a Gastroenteroligist I’ve seen) wants me to take it indefinitely. Their belief is that the the research on really long term effects hasn’t been done yet, or is inconclusive, and that damage to the esophogus, etc. is by far the greater danger. Any thoughts on long term effects would be most appreciated. Thanks, Bob

There is no study that indicates that long term use of PPIs prevent esophageal cancer. In fact, just the opposite; the alkaline reflux that results from acid suppression may be more carcinogenic that the acid reflux. HMc

Hi, Last Thursday, I had a flu virus of some sort with chills and shakes. I noticed I could not swallow anything, not even milk without getting a terrible burning sensation in my chest. 6 days later, the chills and shakes are long gone but this stomach pain endures. This pain only happens when food passes through the esophegyal sphincter. When the muscle itself moves, it burns — a lot! I have not been able to eat anything other than cold soup, chased down with water. My doctor told me to take antacids but this made no difference since the pain does not occur from a reflux but during the contraction of the muscle itself. Can anyone tell me what the hell happened? Is it a hernia? Tissue bur? My doctor seems to think I have somehow burned the sphincter muscle, possibly with reflux while sleeping. Since this has never happened before, I find it hard to believe the first time would be so nasty. I’ve already lost 8 lbs. After 6 days, the pain has not lessened. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. I want to prevent this from ever happening again and would like to have a better idea of what happened in the first place. Thank you so much, Shawn

You need an EGD to assess the esophagus and stomach. Erosive esophagitis needs to be ruled out. HMc

Might the fullness really be gas? Look at your diet and see if it happens more after certain kinds of foods. Sugars and even artificial sweeteners frequently produce gas. Also, are you constipated? This too can lead to a full feeling. To answer your question about nexium – does it help? Louise

But they don’t produce gas in the stomach…that is from swallowed air. The most common reason for air swallowing is reflux. Only about 40% of people with GERD have symptoms of heartburn or "acid indigestion". Having said that, I think it’s reasonable to continue the PPI if it helps your symptoms of bloating. If it doesn’t, I wouldn’t pay for another such pill until the diagnosis had been confirmed. HMc

If you do have gas in your stomach, you could try one of the preparations which contains simethicone (sp?), eg Myalanta. The simethicone will help you burp and get rid of the gas. AB

Question:

My doctor gave me a prescription/samples of Protonix about a month ago. He thought that my chest pains were acid reflux so we should give it a try and see how it goes. He also gave me Xanax for a week becasue I was having panic attacks! I think because I was freaked out about the chest pains. I thought I was dying!(Yes, i went to ER and cardioligist and heart OK) I took the protonix for 3 weeks and then stopped becasue I had no more pains in a long time. Really a few days after I started the meds. Well Last Friday went out for mexican food and my pains started back up again Saturday. I started taking my Protonix again on Sun, I had a about 10 days worth left. Well by Thursday my chest pains were minimal. I have been taking some Malox chewables a few times a day since Tues with the Protonix. I want to describe my symptoms to see if anybody has any advice. I was having and still occasionally have an ache or heaviness in the center of my chest that sometimes spreads wider. Usually it seems after eating. I noticed the other day that when I swallowed it kinda felt "raw" going down. So i washed it down with some cold bottled water I had it it seemed to aggravate my chest/throat more. I sometimes get a real high pressure feeling in my head and ears like im in a airplane and my ears need to pop or something and i get kinda "bristled" all over like Im panicking or something. This usually happens when im lying down. I sometimes wake up at night with this feeling. Kinda scary! Im about 25# over wieght and when i bend or squat or like when Im on my computer with my legs propped on my desk it seems to aggravate my condition. This all started Dec 30 after eating mexican food. My chest hurt BAD! i thought I was having a heart attack. It died down but since then It was a dull ache. i have been through hell since this started. I started having panic attacks and every doctor out there tried to give me Paxil, Zolft, Effexor for depression and anxiety. I feel like i was having those problems becasue I was scared to death I was dying! When i took those drugs I was completely out of my mind. They made me worse! So i quit taking those things and have been better since. However, this past fri the pains came back. Once again after mexican food! So I think my MD was on to something with the Acid reflux. Everybody else tried to treat it like was my head and I beleive it all stemmed from a physical problem i was having. I kind of think i aggravated a wounded esophegus this past weekend. I didnt take the protonix for even 3 weeks when I stopped. Maybe I didnt heal and reaggravated it? Should i be taking the chew tabs with he protonix? Anybody experience any of this?

All that and your doctor hasn’t even made a diagnosis yet. That’s a shame. You need an EGD, esophageal manometry, and ambulatory pH testing. HMc

Sounds like GERD. have you tried a low carb diet.

Response:

A low carb diet made my GERD so bad that I ended up in the emergency room with severe chest pain. Low carb is not good for me, perhaps most GERD suffers because the carbs or starches help neutralize the acidity in the stomach. Smaller portions are the key to losing weight and avoiding/reducing sweet foods such as deserts.
