This is a list of RECOMMENDATIONS.  They’re NOT MY RECOMMENDATIONS.  They’re just HOME REMEDIES. They’re from pages like THIS ONE: http://nhnh.essortment.com/heartburnhomer_rwel.htm And THIS NEWSGROUP. I get heartburn from STRESS and DRINKING and SMOKING and SPICY FOOD!  When that happens, the only solution is to STARVE FOR TWO DAYS! There must be SOMETHING I can eat in those two days!  Something SOOTHING! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> That’s all I’ve got!  Any other ideas?  How about banana cream pie — is > that good for heartburn?  If so, please post here.  Post any food that > soothes heartburn.

I am certain eating natural foods is real helpful for the body anyway, and losing that weight by getting off the mexican food, fast food, and etc is very helpful. Atleast for me it is, however it doesnt cure the problem. This guy may want to get checked out for peptic ulcer and if he does have it, should demand the treatment for one, or atleast try the all to famous 16 umf honey which is continually used in Australia and New Zealand for ulcers. By the way, took a tea spoon of it and made my soar throat go away 2 weeks ago. Anyway I agree about the foods.. but its always smart to eat healthy and I cant imagine buttermilk in the end helps anything but a fat stomach, which leads to more problems. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> HMc

There are foods that make heartburn worse but the only way to stop it is to take your meds AND eat smaller meals. Also, avoid eating near bedtime. Stay away from the bigtime offenders and eat tiny portions of the rest.  DON’T LET YOUR SELF GET FULL!  That makes a big difference for me.  I like baked potatoes w/lt. butter and lo fat cheese or just small slices of cold turkey or chicken.  Fresh melon and bannanas are fine.  Lo fat/sugar ice cream is good if it’s not chocolate.  Alcohol is very, very bad for me…especially red wine.  Hope that helps. Your post indicates a complete lack of understanding of the mechanisms of acid reflux. I recommend a more thorough investigation than you have done so far. Having said that, I’m sure most people would agree that you should not eat foods that make you feel bad, and should eat foods that make you feel good. Good luck in your search. HMc

Most of these I would call a "bad idea", even if they seem to soothe. If you are having heartburn, then you’ve most likely got some acid reflux happening.  In that case you want to avoid foods that increase the acid level in your esophagus, either by being acidic in themselves (the water with vinegar or apple juice), causing an increase in stomach acid levels (green tea), or by causing relaxation of the LES (peppermint tea). Indeed, the list you’ve compiled is almost entirely a list of items I try to moderate because they *aggravate* my reflux.  The only item I see in your list that I’d even recommend is ginger, as I’ve never had ginger seem to aggravate my GERD (and I rather like ginger, too). — Richard W Kaszeta http://www.kaszeta.org/rich

"Soothing foods", whatever those are, won’t stop reflux and may very well not even control the symptoms. OTOH, it is important to avoid foods that promote dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter, which in turn augments reflux. Those things include nicotine, alcohol, caffiene (such as in tea) and many tomato spices. Also, transient inappropriate lower esophageal sphincter relaxation (TLESR) is promoted by a full stomach. "Soothing foods" is a teliologic concept that has little to do with acid reflux. HMc

Response:

Yes, esophagitis can trigger reflux. Ginger helps heal esophagitis as well, as I said. The problem I had before was that it kept coming back until I quit dairy (this includes crackers, breads, cheese, and anything else with even an atom of milk in it — even eating a piece of bread containing milk will give me heartburn) and other irritating foods (such as vinegar, lemons, or tomatoes). Now I have no problem drinking water and I really don’t have any acid reflux after meals. Granted, I’m not "normal" yet, but I was just about there before I became sick with the flu and vomited my way back into esophagitis hell last week. i was just diagnosed as manic depressive (the kind where you haven’t had a major manic phase, just hypomanic ones) in the beginning of january, and just discovered this newsgroup, which makes me really happy b/c i’ve been feeling very alone with this disease.  i know a ton of people who have been diagnosed as depressive and been on various meds for it, but i don’t know anyone else who is manic.   but anyway, i have been on 4 anti-depressants in the past year and a half (prozac, zoloft, paxil, and pamelor) and all of them made me hypomanic.  right now i’m on 900 mg of lithium per day and i just had some questions which my pdoc hasn’t been able to answer really well, since she hasn’t gone through this herself.  i’ve noticed that with the lithium i have felt very clumsy and sort of "slow" — i can’t seem to formulate a thought as well, find the right words as easily, i’m always tripping over things (in fact last week, i fell and gave myself a concussion).  is this normal?  i mean, do other people feel this or is it just me? i’m just feeling kind of scared b/c i don’t want to lose that quick, bright, funny side of myself that the MD brings on.  i have just been feeling so stupid and slow lately. will this get better with time or am i going to feel like this as long as i am on the lithium? thanks, chris

Hi Chris, For me, it gets better and then it may get worse for awhile too.  I think it’s related to my mood, or what my mood would have been without the lithium. As your typical m-d, I have some theories about everything, including this stupidity: the lithium interrupts my spiraling into mania or depression; it short-circuits the obsession to euphoria, rage, or unhappiness.  A lot of my "intelligence" was derived from my ability to obsess about something until I got it right.  On lithium, I have to find another way to be smart, and it’s hard work sometimes . . . I remember the first paper I wrote when I went back to graduate school after 2 years on lithium.  I thought I was a 2nd grader. But, I think I have found some ways to be smart with the derailment of my thought which lithium provides.  It reminds me of how a functioning alcoholic can accomplish many tasks while drunk, but has no idea how to do them when sober.  The part of our mind that learned how to be smart without the lithium isn’t activated anymore, but we can learn how to be smart with another part of our minds, I do believe. Question:

>>I mean, it’s not life threatening or anything but it can be so rotten.<<

Constant irritation to the esophageal lining by stomach acid can lead to a condition called Barretts Esophagus. This is a precursor to Esophageal Cancer. Only 10% with Barretts go on to actually get Esophageal Cancer but, I would not want to be one of the 10%. If you are having heartburn more than twice a week do not treat it lightly. Seek medical attention. Ginger juice is a pungent spice. Proceed with caution. It has made some people worse. Some have made the claim that it has helped them but no explanation is given as to why it seems to help. Is it merely numbing the esophageal lining while the acid continues its damage? If anyone has any official studies on the use of Ginger Juice for heartburn, I would be more than interested in seeing them. Heartburn and Gastro Esophageal Reflux web page: http://www.heartburn-help.com

Response:

I did some research on ginger juice and wow! it sounds pretty good. So that’s what I am going to try. The more I think about the drugs I was given for my H.pylori the less I want to take them. For one thing they sound as if they will give my stomach a real battering. And for another thing, there seems to be very little certainty that my symptoms will be cured. My heartburn is worse at night, when it stops me sleeping. I tried raising the head of the bed around 8 inches. I found this amazingly uncomfortable, plus it made no difference. I have to confess I could only put up with it for 2 or 3 nights. It’s amazing that something like heartburn can make such a difference to your life. I mean, it’s not life threatening or anything but it can be so rotten. I’ve got a friend with a cancerous eye tumour and when I start to feel too sorry for myself, I think of her and remind myself whose shoes I’d rather be in.

Robert,   I think you have brought up an interesting topic. I found that as the years went by, there seemed to be a definite correlation between my bipolar cycles and my acid reflux/ irregularity. Sometimes I feel superb, with no problems either emotional or physical. Then other times the dual symptoms appear. It should be noted that the gastrointestinal distress often occurs first, while I am possessed of a wholesome attitude.    Unfortunately, the bipolar meds which are able to normalize my attitude, haven’t affected the physical symptoms which preceeded my depressions. It’s a symptom of anxiety or a medication side effect (try chewing on a slice of fresh ginger), or you could have a gastroenterologic disorder. So what are the current views on this surgery? I have had it up to my sphincter with meds (pun intended). 1. How long (on average) can I expect to be recuperating and able to return to work… 2. Any serious side effects… 3. Will I be able to burp afterwords… Thanks in advance for all advice :-) Ed W

Response:

Ed, You are going to have to do some hard searching for yourself because you will probably get a wide range of answers in this area. While I haven’t had the operation, I did come very close to calling the surgeon to make an appointment (Feb 1997). Thankfully, I was able to use Ginger Root Juice to get my esophagus back in condition so I could continue eating. Over time I was able to change some of my lifestyles and I have been able to avoid the operation. As to the operation, common sense tells me that no doc can replace or strengthen a muscle (specifically the LES) by wrapping part of your stomach around the lower part of your esophagus. I think all the docs can do is wrap the upper part of the stomach around the LES and lower esophagus and make the esophagus tighter. However, just making the esophagus tighter can have some bad affects on your ability to swallow. And as you question, some people who have had the operation complain of not being able to burp or throw up. If the docs would be honest with you they would tell you that when the operation was first started about 30 years ago all of the operations were 100% wraps (the wrap is where the docs take the upper portion of the stomach that has pooched up into your chest and wrap it around your lower esophagus). Later some docs discovered the 100% wrap didn’t work. Then the docs started experimenting with 90%, 80%, 70% wraps. You might ask your prospective surgeon what % wrap he intends to use on you and what criteria he used to determine what % wrap to use. Could make for some interesting conversations. Personally I don’t see how a doc can determine what percent wrap to use. And no matter what % wrap they do use, it can’t possibly replace the function of a muscle. Now, I don’t mean to sound like I know it all. I don’t!! But, I do know that some very simple lifestyle changes can make some big improvements to your GERD problem. One very simple one is just by standing erect and walking right after a meal will help tremendously. Most people (like I did for years before I learned) will go sit in a recliner or slouch in a chair right after eating and that causes the food and acid in your stomach to press up against your LES and causes it to weaken over the years. Other changes to your lifestyle that will help is to raise the head of your bed frame, not just prop up your head. A world of difference. And since your stomach is the seat of your emotions, your emotional state of mind, being negative, mad, angry, etc. etc. can have a very bad affect on your digestive system. And these changes I suggest won’t have an over the night affect or over the week or month or even years. It has taken years for your LES to become weakened to the point that you have continual heartburn and so it will probably take many days, weeks, or even years to correct the problem. But, like most people, most of us aren’t willing to make the changes. Most people want instant gratification. Pop a pill. Have the operation. Etc. etc. Think about it. For your sake. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->>So what are the current views on this surgery? I have had it up to my >>sphincter with meds (pun intended). >>1.      I recently asked my Dr. about this procedure. His answer was that the failure rate for Dr.s who have done this surgery a lot was still 30%. It could actually make your situation worse. He said to wait a few years and then reconsider. Personally I can live with the way things are now rather than take the risk of surgery. In the meantime I’m working at "behaving" myself with diet, etc. Debi

Stress has a profound effect on how bad my reflux is. If I have to drive in Manhattan I find myself holding my stomach in. This puts pressure on the diaphragm as you stated and then the reflux is worse. I force myself to relax and breath deeply. I have tried it.. It seem to help but it could very well have been a placebo effect. I have talked to many people that have used Ginger to relieve heartburn and have found that most seem to think it helps. A few found that it made their heartburn symptoms worse. To date, no one has been able to explain to me why it would reduce heartburn symptoms. The formula is posted on the www.heartburn-help.com web site under Herbs and Vitamins. I would recommend talking to your doctor before trying this and even then proceed with caution. If anyone has experience with Ginger, good or bad, please post here. Eve, I started using Ginger Root Juice (GRJ) and found out about it on this newsgroup. The man who told me about it discovered it in a book ‘Saving Yourself From The Disease-Care Crisis’ by Dr. walt Stoll. Copies can be ordered at 1-800-464-7034. I have suffered from a hiatal hernia (HH) since 1975 and had gotten along pretty good by watching what I ate, raising the head of my bed frame *not just my head* and taking Zantac 150 mg. as needed and the occasional over-the-counter antacid. All this worked good until I took an early retirement in Feb. 1996 and within a year my condition had deteriorated to the point my esophagus was so tender I was having trouble swallowing anything. I was living on cold cereal and milk. I was on the verge of calling a surgeon to have the Nissen Fundoplication operation to try and help my situation. I thought it was my only choice. But, luckily I read about GRJ. The article in the cited book reads as follows: "  Hiatus hernia is an increasingly common condition in which gastric contents escape up into the esophagus, causing heartburn symptoms that tend to be worse when the person is lying down.  Hiatus hernia can be simply, cheaply and safely resolved. The conventional medical options for treatment are dangerous (surgery), expensive (special antacids [Gaviscon] to coat the esophagus, prescription antispasmotics and tranquilizers); a real bother (propping up the head of the bed eight inches, not eating for four hours before retiring, avoiding alcohol and losing weight); and not very effective.  Although the following simple treatment was originally described to me as a way to cure hiatus hernia, it is also nearly as effective for other symptoms of the upper intestinal tract that have not responded to conventional treatment.  Anyone with an established diagnosis of hiatus hernia should do the following if they would like to be rid of it. Go to the grocery store and buy about two pounds of fresh ginger root (you will find it in the fresh vegetable section). The heavier the root, the more juice there is in it. Buy about two pounds of the stuff. Extract the juice with a juicer. For some reason (the Chinese medical practitioners know why — something to do with the yin/yan), the shredding type of juicer works best. If you use a blender (that slices things up) this will not work as well. Collect all the juice and store it in the refrigerator. You will notice some settlings in the bottom which you can safely ignore.  Every morning, on arising, take a teaspoon of the juice straight. At  first, it will feel like you have swallowed two-hundred proof alcohol.  However, the sensation will cause you no harm and lasts only a few seconds. In a few days, you will become accustomed to the warming sensation and won’t notice it so much. Be sure to keep this up for a full three weeks or the problem may recur.  Within a few days you will begin to see some benefits. Your problem should be gone long before the three weeks are up. If the problem should ever start to come back, just do the procedure again. However, if you start as soon as the symptoms recur, you should only have to take the ginger root juice a few days. If you wait till it has been there for a few months, you may have to do the whole three weeks again." I quickly state that the GRJ *won’t* cure GERD or heartburn but it definitely will sooth and help heal your esophagus. My esophagus got better within three days so that I could eat food that I hadn’t been able to eat for months. Then with your esophagus soothed and somewhat healed you can make some lifestyle changes that will definitely help. Like what, when, how and the time of day you eat. There are many, many things you can do to help the situation. Like properly chewing all food, stopping all caffeine, spices, hot and cold liquids, ments, nicotine, etc. etc. Different foods will trigger reflux in different people. It will take some experimenting to discover your triggers. Other things like your posture during and after eating. Standing up straight and taking a small walk will help the food move out of your stomach and into your small intestine. The worse thing you can do is what most of us do is immediately after eating sit in a recliner and lean back or slouch down. This allow reflux to touch the LES and thereby weaken the LES. Now, you must remember it has taken you probably years for your condition to become painful so the suggestions I make won’t make a difference in a few days, months or possibly years. But you will improve over time. There is no quick remedy for this situation. And definitely the Nissen Fundoplication operation won’t work. The docs are trying to replace a muscle, the LES, with a flap of your stomach. It just won’t work. Read the posts of people who have had the operation and still have the acid reflux. Some other things you can do is Positive Thinking and Positive Imagine, Yoga, Meditation, exercise, etc. etc. Your stomach is the seat of your emotions and negative emotions plays havoc on your digestion. Anyway, I hope I’ve given you some things to think about. I will be glad to answer any questions you may have by email. Good luck. Bill

Question:

Recently, I was having problems with chest pains, particularly after hiking on a hot and humid day near Augusta, GA.  I had also had chest pains when not hiking.  The MD determined that it was acid rather than cardiovascular, and then gave me some prevacid, which, after several hours relieved the problem.  I have taken the 30 mg dose.  I took the dose for three days, with success, except for one day, when the pains returned upon walking. I have skipped a day, not taking prevacid.  Is there a problem if I skip it if I am not having acid reflux pains? I have also been drinking small amounts of aloe vera juice, when seems to be helpful.  Will doing so interfere with the prevacid.  Also, will taking such preparation as Mylanta or pills containing simethicone interfere with prevacid? This coming weekend, I might be going deep sea fishing off the NC coast. I am prone to sea sickness and might take dramamine and ginger.  Will any of these interfere with prevacid?  Will sea sickness aggravate the acid problem? I look forward to your responses. Moses here: It sounds like your in an early stage of GERD. > I have skipped a day, not taking prevacid.  Is there a problem if I >skip it if I am not having acid reflux pains?

I not completely sure. It seems a lot poeple damaged even when their not to aware of it. > I have also been drinking small amounts of aloe vera juice, when seems > to be helpful.  Will doing so interfere with the prevacid.  Also, will > taking such preparation as Mylanta or pills containing simethicone > interfere with prevacid?

Why would you want to take simethicone? Having "gas"? Some who have become H. pylori postive also seem to become more lactose intolerant. The alumium hydroxide ihn the Mylanta would worry me for I would think it might cause absorptions problems. Alumium hydroxide has the property of binding to both acids and bases. Yet, I don’t think it is a real problem since if I recall correctly the drug trails allowed the use of antacids. And alumium hydroxide is the principle one most used. OK, here it is but this a Prilosec information insert not Prevacid info insert. > This coming weekend, I might be going deep sea fishing off the NC coast. > I am prone to sea sickness and might take dramamine and ginger.  Will > any of these interfere with prevacid?  Will sea sickness aggravate the > acid problem?

I’d take the drug early enough so if you throw up, the capsule contents were already well into the small intestine. A couple of hours before boarding the boat. That way you would be less likely to vomit out part of the time release granules. Happy Sailing… over and out ….Moses Clarke Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

> > I have skipped a day, not taking prevacid.  Is there a problem if I >skip it if I am not having acid reflux pains?

Prevacid stops the production, repeat PRODUCTION, of stomach acid. It is not doing anything to correct the causes of why you have too much stomach acid. You must begin to rebuild your digestive system if you want a permanent solution, (other than taking a pill every day that will eventually lead to more problems). I would begin by taking an achidolphilus supplement.  You should also use some digestive bitters and/or enzymes.  You didn’t get this way overnight and it is going to take a while to rebuild. > I have also been drinking small amounts of aloe vera juice, when seems > to be helpful.  Will doing so interfere with the prevacid.  Also, will > taking such preparation as Mylanta or pills containing simethicone > interfere with prevacid?

No it will not, but you shouldn’t need mylanta with this.  Instead of simethicone, try some herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, or something with cinnamon. Response:

Moses here: Mitzeli, the problem isn’t excess acid, it is that the acid isn’t staying were it is supposed to be. A person with acid relux has a weaken lower esophageal sphinter that leaks. It permits the back flow of less than 2.0 PH gastric juices up the esophagus. Acid so strong it would burn your skin if left on it. The idea is shut down the acid production so as to make the reflux none damaging. You should have suggested a powerful vitamin B-12 supplement as low to no acid reduces absorption of this nutrient. If GERD type is untreated peppermint tends to worsen the problem as it is said to relax the LES. Chamomile is said to be good? I suspect alginate would be good for this to, though it’s popularity pasted  more than 20 years ago…. so try to find it. Do recall you what it is used for in a popular over-the-counter med and what it was used for 20+ years ago by alt/health food types? Two answers required. I would like to know what exercise you do to get rid of the "burn". Lou

Response:

OK, here are the exercises: Create a vacuum in your lungs, by sucking in air through pursed lips, pretending to suck a thick liquid through a straw. Then blowing out air through the same small opening, creating pressure on your lungs by you muscles. If you do this for a while on a daily basis, your muscles will have toned up in such a way that they keep the sphincter in the esophagus closed. Pretty simple, and much better than the ginger root juice, etc, which does not work long-term.

I have viewed your Web page and it is really very good. I used Ginger root juice for my heartburn for several weeks and it help tremendously. Within three days I noticed a marked difference. A routine physical blood test showed I have H. pylori bacteria in my stomach. I am now treating that with several meds. Hope that cures that and that will help cure my GERD. Thanks for the input to this Newsgroup. Maybe it will catch on.

Very interesting Anna. Does the heartburn stop when you are away from the second hand smoke? The rule of thumb is if you are having heartburn more than twice a week, you should see you doctor. Have you been checked to rule out other possable causes? Hawk Heartburn and Gastro Esophageal Reflux web page: http://members.aol.com/HawkTear/index.html
