2" rear block lift only on 2003 2wd chevy 2wd s10 blazer ???

Question:

DING DING!! Air bags— the best way to go. And not too pricey, either. Plus you can "remove" them when you don’t need them <drop the pressure to just a pound or two> You can get them from JCW for about $150 or so.

Response:

Following up on my own question. Will the stock 2wd rear shocks be long up enough for a 2" rear lift? It also does appear that Tough Country makes a block lift for the s-10 2wd blazer – not sure why. The truck’s rear uses springs (not coils).. What about the following Warrior 1.5" spring shackle product http://www.tellico4×4.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_offroad/6360 1-1/2" Rear Lift Shackles For Chevy $34.95 Will the stock shocks be long enough with this product? Will the ride be noticably tighter? Long term effects on the suspension/truck. Thanks.

Response:

Isn’t the rear of an S10 ABOVE the leafs? adding a block will lower it. On my 87 I added blocks to lower it level with the V8 installed.

Good point, I was assuming he had done a spring-over — Mad Dog

Yes its spring (not coil). How about shackles like these: http://www.tellico4×4.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_offroad/6360 Good idea? Will the 2" lift seriously impact the ride/ stock shocks (2003 s10 blazer 2wd) ? Today I think the back end is all over the place anyways. Thanks.

Response:

When i said "spring-over" i meant locating the axle under the springs which would lift the truck w/o changing springs but you must cut the spring perches off the bottom of the axle housing and weld them on top. 4" of shackle length will lift the truck 2" Shackle length versus lift is a 2:1 ratio I don’t like shackles because they allow lateral axle movement. — Mad Dog

Good info Mad .. True newbie here and looking for some info like this help make desicion. In terms of lateral movement, whats the risk? and are shackles any worse than blocks? Also, how can these guys claim max lift of 2" on a 1.5" product? BTW, I wont be doing any real offroading with this truck, but will be towing a 20 foot cruiser. thanks again.

Response:

I ‘m thinking that blocks are out of the question because as "Styx" pointed out your axle is above the springs so blocks will lower the vehicle. The thought of towing a 20′ cruiser with extended shackles gives me heartburn. You should seriously consider beefing the leafs or installing air-bags. — Mad Dog

If it doesn’t come with longer u-bolts…..get them You wont need to shim the angle cause it under 4" of lift. Maybe you should consider a add a leaf kit instead of blocks, it would supplement the load carrying capacity while lifting the ass end and they are safer than blocks. — Mad Dog

excruciating heartburn / esophagitis

Question:

Developed after 10 days on Doxycycline as treatment for prostatitis. My gastroenterologist suspects the doxycycline is the cause.  I would tend to agree, but I always took it with a full meal, so can’t quite see how it could have worked its evil on my esophagus.  Anyway, assuming I have doxy induced esophagitis, my doc put me on 30mg prevacid 1x/day, and sucralfate 4x/day.  So far, after only 1 day’s treatment, I am still in agony.  I have slept virtually not at all the past two nights because of the pain, which is still excruciating even when fully upright.  Food or lack of it does little to affect the pain.  Tylenol seems to do nothing as well. Is there any medication I can take to relieve the pain so that I can sleep and let the other medicines do their work?  I’ve heard of a "GI cocktail" that has lidocain in it that is used in ERs.  Is there something similar OTC? TIA for any and all ideas — John.

First of all, one can take prevacid 30 mg twice a day.  It is a large dose, but not that infrequently done (I’m doing it for the last month and it’s helped a lot with acid burning my throat till I could barely talk).  If you’re in the US, and using our wonderful insurance plans…..your doctor will have to get special permission for the large dose, but it can be done and it will make a big difference. Also, OTC Gaviscon is different from other antacids in that it creates a barrier of foam so the acid has a harder time refluxing.  If you take too much, the magnesium in it might give you some diahrrea – but again, for a little while, no harm done. In the health food camp:  1 tsp of aloe vera juice (pure) a few times a day.  DGL (deglycerized licorice) tablets chewed 15 minutes before meals. Put some kind of blocks under the head of your bed so that it is at an angle – they usually recommend 6 to 8 inches.   DO NOT USE EXTRA PILLOWS – you need the blocks under the top of the boxspring to create the proper angle. There are other things, such as medicines available in other countries, but not here, but those will take weeks for you to get and you’ll probably be better by then. Hope this helps and that you’re feeling better soon. Louise

flare up because of SPLENDA?

Question:

I have had heartburn incidences periodically for over 15 years. Starting at the end of September, I had the flare up from hell. Nonstop pain.  Last weekend I had no pain.  Oddly enough, I was out of town.  I kept thinking to myself what was different.  I realized that I had not brought my Splenda (sugar substitute with me) and was using Equal and regular sugar.  Since I have been home, I have used only real sugar and still no pain. Coincidence?  Maybe.  But it was in September that I started using Splenda.  Anyone else ever have problems with this?  I know it is not the cause of my original problem, but it seems that it heightened the pain intensity and amount.

YES!   I have been increasingly sick for over a year and recently discovered that all the non-absorbable sugars tend to cause excessive gas.  I was using Splenda almost exclusively during this time but never put the two together. In my case the increased gas definitely has been connected to increased reflux.  I have stopped all artificial sweeteners and I’m not all better, but I’m noticeably improved. I’ve been trying xylitol (Miracle Sweet) which comes from Finland and is, I believe a natural and absorbable sugar.   I think it’s ok but I’m so flared that it’s hard to tell. My gastro (AFTER I found out about the artificial sweeteners), also told me that some people have trouble with the sugars in milk products as well. Keep us posted as to how you’re doing and what you’ve found.   Louise

hi louise! thanks for your input.  10 days splenda free and there is a major difference.  like i said, it wasn’t what caused years of reflux, but what has amazed me is how i have controlled my diet so well and still had horrible problems while i was using splenda.  if i had eaten this way before, i would never have had a problem.  this body hasn’t seen a margarita or mexican food for 4 months now…no sodas, fried foods, fatty foods etc.  i eat small amounts intentionally avoiding that sensation of being "full".  i just eat to ease the hunger and wait and do it again when i need to.  no big dinners and i raise the head of my bed and i don’t wear tight clothing around the middle.  if splenda was indeed the "bad guy", that would explain why none of that was working very well.  i am gonna stay off the rest of 2003 and see what happens.  I WANNA GET OFF MY MEDS!!!!  anyone else out there ever had an issue with this?  howard, how about any of your patients?  i have to believe there are foods that have a negative affect on this condition in certain sensitive individuals. melanie

hi, I assume that you do know about the "standard" no-no foods such as carbonated beverages, chocolate, alcohol, mint, and for me, definitely garlic and onions.  I also discovered that the menthol in cough drops is a peppermint based substance and should be avoided. Do you find that gas builds up when you have the worst reflux? Louise —

Deanie, God bless you for the suggestions.  I am currently taking 150mg generic Zantac at bedtime for horrible acid reflux.  Thought I had a heart attack one night, almost called my internist at about 2AM one morning. The Gastroenterologist that decided I had IBS after giving me an Endoscopy & Colonoscopy (maternal grandma had colon cancer) is only giving me MiraLax.  That is a prescription laxative to help with the miserable constipation from the Methadone.  I had planned to schedule an appt. with him this week or next, and will ask. Thank you again for the suggestions, I have felt so lost since he first suggested that I had IBS.  When I told him of the horrible pain, he just nodded, and said ok.  He did not offer any drugs to help the problem.  Like many docs I have seen in the past, he probably thinks that at 12 scripts already, I am taking enough prescription medication. Too bad he doesn’t have the care/comfort of the patient primary in his mind.  He didn’t even tell me that there were meds available to help with the IBS, or possibly the pain from it.  I will say that 70-80mg of Methadone a day doesn’t even touch the pain in the abdomen! Some days the pain feels like the stomach proper, and other days it does feel lower, like in the intestines.  That’s just me guessing, tho, it could all be in the intestines, and I just don’t know how low the stomach is in the human body :-} Again, thanks for the help, hope you are having as pain free nights & days as is humanly possible.  You are in my thoughts & prayers, and I will put 36 cents in the pishka for you.  Your kindness & support are nothing short of amazing.          With Love, Caring, & Peace,                   Albert — Tis easier to go thru the eye of a needle, than the knee of an idol                        web    http://www.schmendrik.org

Thanks Di and Jan :) I was up early because I had a followup with the gastroenterologist today.  I saw her about 3 months ago with a swallowing problem, and was unable at that time to do a test she wanted because of a work conflict (no coverage when you are a one-woman show). The swallowing problem has disappeared, however, I’m having discomfort in my chest  which goes straight thru to my back, which sometimes worsens after I eat.  It’s like a dull ache, and lasts off and on for days. She was very concerned that, as a diabetic, I had not had a cardiology workup in 7 years, especially since I take heart meds and still experience palpitations and occasional tachycardia.  She doesn’t believe in taking chances where diabetics and chest pain are concerned.  She insisted that I go back to my cardiologist for a complete exam. The Gastro Doc is also going to do an upper GI and Barium Swallowing test to rule out any problems with my esophagus, especially Barrett’s Esophagus, since I have experienced heartburn for many years.   All in all, I am very pleased with the care I received….. Now, if I can just get a referral to an endo ;) Bev Remove the "SpamFree" for email, please.

I hope you get better and it isn’t bad news after your tests. Love Di

I really don’t expect a heart problem to be the culprit, but the gastro doc is concerned.   I have had cardio problems before, such as tachycardia and irregular heartbeat, but as far as heart disease I’ve been clear in the past.  I guess this will just provide a base line exam, since I haven’t had one in 7 years. Question:

>>I mean, it’s not life threatening or anything but it can be so rotten.<<

Constant irritation to the esophageal lining by stomach acid can lead to a condition called Barretts Esophagus. This is a precursor to Esophageal Cancer. Only 10% with Barretts go on to actually get Esophageal Cancer but, I would not want to be one of the 10%. If you are having heartburn more than twice a week do not treat it lightly. Seek medical attention. Ginger juice is a pungent spice. Proceed with caution. It has made some people worse. Some have made the claim that it has helped them but no explanation is given as to why it seems to help. Is it merely numbing the esophageal lining while the acid continues its damage? If anyone has any official studies on the use of Ginger Juice for heartburn, I would be more than interested in seeing them. Heartburn and Gastro Esophageal Reflux web page: http://www.heartburn-help.com

Response:

I did some research on ginger juice and wow! it sounds pretty good. So that’s what I am going to try. The more I think about the drugs I was given for my H.pylori the less I want to take them. For one thing they sound as if they will give my stomach a real battering. And for another thing, there seems to be very little certainty that my symptoms will be cured. My heartburn is worse at night, when it stops me sleeping. I tried raising the head of the bed around 8 inches. I found this amazingly uncomfortable, plus it made no difference. I have to confess I could only put up with it for 2 or 3 nights. It’s amazing that something like heartburn can make such a difference to your life. I mean, it’s not life threatening or anything but it can be so rotten. I’ve got a friend with a cancerous eye tumour and when I start to feel too sorry for myself, I think of her and remind myself whose shoes I’d rather be in.

I am on neurontin and I have mixed feelings about it.  Sometimes it seems to help and others, not much at all.  It also sometimes gives me odd feelings, like my nerves are kind-of jerking.  It has not stopped my "CPS with neurogenic features" (sheesh!) from progressing. However, I don’t want to come off it either as it is at least some help. Sorry to be so ambivalent about it.  I did have severe dizziness at first but this soon wore off. I was started on it, but I was having side effects I didn’t like (like feeling slow, and not all there) so I never got up to a high enough dose to get any pain relief. Im starting another similar drug now, called Topamax. So far no bad side effects, but no pain relief, either. But again, I just started, so Im not sure how much more I have to increase before I can expect some pain relief if its going to work. Good Luck! Before you buy.

They say that neurontin is primarily to decrease likelihood o seizures occurring, but attempting to block neuro/nervous signal activity. Supposedly, less nerve signals can mean less pain signals as well. Dan,      I don’t know what level of pain you are living with, but to be honest, it sure sounds as if you are seriously under – medicated. Although I do not know what the direct cause of your new symptom is, I can tell you that chronic, severe pain can play havoc with the central nervous system. I went to bed one night and the left side of my body went completely numb.Figuring I had had a stroke I called 911 and it turns out it was misfirings in my CNS. Because of my pain level, stuff like this happens fairly regularly. When you said that one more problem and you couldn’t go on, it sure sounds like you are living in way too much pain.      I have a good friend who has what are called ortho- static tremors, which even when he is having a flare-up, there is no outwardly visible shaking or trembling. However he feels the sensation so strong, he has to sit down. The origin is presently unknown, but I do know he is prescribed Demerol for severe pain and he does not use it correctly. He will let himself get into agony before he takes it, which is why I suggested your new problem may be similar.      Whose idea was the 5 years of Ultam. If it is your PCP , perhaps a referral to a pain clinic is in order. If it is a pain doc who is letting you remain in pain, he is doing you no good and IMO is causing you harm . The money you are paying for Ultram would buy a whole lot of Methadone, and you would actually get some relief. We just recently had a long thread on Ultram, and one thing that was apparent was that it is not effective for severe pain in most cases.( if any )      Please pressure your Doc to get moving on your new problem and your old pain. Keep us up to date. Peace, Richard

I would be so happy, I used to be very active, and do lots of stuff, but now its all I can do to keep my website going (It keeps me going too).. Next time I visit the doc, I’ll request a better drug.. I did try Ty.#3, but even TWO tablets did nothing, so now I have nearly 100 pills that are going to waste.. I guess I’ll just use them for headaches.. hehe.. ugh. P:S By the way, I also wait until I am hurting REAL bad before I take my meds– I read the Ultram threads, I personally don’t have a dependence on it, when I feel good (rarely as of late) I don’t take any… no problem either.. (Thank god)..  but when a person is in so much pain 99% of the time, getting addicted isn’t what people are going to really worry about starting out, atleast thats how I kinda feel.. I have personally told my doc I don’t wanna take hard meds if I can help it.. BUT, theres a point where its too much.. I am 27 also, Doc says I am too young to start reg. doses of that II or III stuff.. — Dan Huling aka "Ziroc" The Great Escape Studios Free 3D Models – Animated PC Movies – Webdesign – Support for many PC RPG Games (IronWorks) www.tgeweb.com (ICQ: 1472240 )

Well Dan sorry you have a doctor that thinks age has something to do with what type of medications you take.  Maybe you should ask him him why they make pediatric dosages of morphine?  Age has nothing to do with when a person starts any type of med.  Maybe another Drs.. opinion is in order.  As far as posts others have made regarding how a particular medication has changed their life, each of us reacts differently to different medications. So people get help from oxycontin where i personally dont. MS contin does work well for me.  So there are many dif types of meds, they hope is that you may find a Dr. who is willing to work with you to find a med that fits your condition and your body.  My dr. described it as we all have different chemistry and we had to find meds what worked with that chemistry.  Thanks

Throat irritation from inhalants?

Question:

Same thing happened to me. When I discontinued the inhaled steroids, the throat eventually (several months) resolved itself. >The pulmonologist says no cause and effect;  the ENT doc says no cause and >effect.  Both want to treat me for acid reflux, which I have never had in my >life.

They mentioned reflux to me but I it turned out not to be so. Jo.

>>"Is there any evidence that long-term use of inhaled steroids and

broncho-dilators might be the cause of esophageal inflammation? <snip> Both want to treat me for acid reflux, which I have never had in my life."<< Yes, they can cause irritation of the throat. Acid reflux is also very common and can produce the symptoms you describe. I would address both by using a spacer, rinsing your mouth after meds, and treating the reflux. If you feel beter you can always reduce or stop the reflux meds and see if it comes back. — CBI, M.D. Please note: It is impossible to accurately diagnose medical problems without seeing the patient and reviewing the entire history. Is there any evidence that long-term use of inhaled steroids and broncho-dilators might be the cause of esophageal inflammation? Specifically, I have been using beclovent and Serevent for just 3 months, and starting about 2 months ago I developed a severe inflamed irritation in my throat.  It impedes breathing somewhat, especially at night, and even produced an occasional laryngo-spasm where the throat closed up completely. The pulmonologist says no cause and effect;  the ENT doc says no cause and effect.  Both want to treat me for acid reflux, which I have never had in my life. Is there any literature on this?   Thanks. Joel
